Gamereport: Heidelberg @ Heilbronn
The Heidelberg Hedgehogs traveled to Heilbronn to take on the Pirates in the 2nd round of the BWBSV Pokal. Heilbronn had advanced to the 2nd round when Gammertingen did not show up for the 1st round encounter. The Hedgehogs had advanced by thumping the Freiberg Knights.
The game started quickly for the Hedgehogs scoring 5 runs in the 1st on hits from Robert Kane, Patrick Schoppa and doubles from Alex Krull and Bastian Von Nettlebladt.
Dom Dorer took the mound for his first start as a Hedgehog and in the bottom of the 1st gave up a run on 2 doubles.
In the top of the 2nd the Hedgehogs scored 3 runs on consecutive doubles by Dave Cox, Luis Gonzales, and Robert Kane. Singles by Patrick Schoppa and Alex Krull finished the scoring.
Dom set the Pirates down in the bottom of the second, 3 up and 3 down.
The Hedgehogs struck for 5 more in the 3rd with singles by Simon Von Schwedler, Jeff Berks and a double by the Erik Braun. 2 errors by the Pirates Shortstop sandwiched around Kane’s single scored the last 2 runs of the inning.
In the bottom of the 3rd Dorer left one up and over the plate to the Pirates 3rd baseman who hit a two run shot over the leftfield fence. He walked the next batter. After a visit to the mound by the Pitching Coach, Dave Cox, he settled down striking out the next batter to end the inning.
In the 4th the Hedgehogs picked up 2 more runs on a double by Erik Braun, a single by Cox and a Sacrifice Fly from Gonzales.
Dorer was perfect in the bottom of the 4th striking out the last 2 batters in the inning.
In the top of the 5th the Hedgehogs brought out the heavy artillery. 3 run Homeruns by Dave Cox and Alex “Krusty” Krull highlighted a 9 run outburst. A ground rule double by Dr. Leopold Sellner and singles by Jeff Berks, Erik Braun, and Von Schwedler completed the scoring.
Manager Les Green, in an effort to look at his seldom used Bullpen, brought the veteran right-hander Patrick Schoppa in to finish the game. Schoppa got the Pirates to ground into 3 easy outs and it was all over. The final score of 24-3 brought Hedgehogs total runs scored in the last 3 games, all of which only lasted 5 innings, to 64. In the last 3 games the Hedgehogs have only given up 4 runs.
