Gamreport: Saarlouis @ Heidelberg
It was another outstanding effort by the Heidelberg Hedgehogs in what was set to be the top match up in this weekend in the RLSW. The Hedgehogs ended up winning by scores of 12-2 and 14-1 as the Hedgehogs continued where they left off last weekend.
The 1st game started slowly with no runs scored by either team in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning Patrick Schoppa lead off with a single. Walks to Alex Krull and Dom Dorer loaded the bases. Another walk to Jeff Berks loaded the bases. Erik Braun hit a 2 run double and the Hedgehogs never looked back. In the 4th Luis Gonzalez singled and stole 2nd. Robert Kane drove him in with a single.
It was more of the same in the 5th. Krull singled to lead off the inning followed by a walk to Leo Sellner. Dorer singled in a run. After Jeff Berks Flied out to the Centerfielder, Braun singled and Dave Cox reached on an error. And then Luis Gonzalez, “L-Gon”, hit a big fly that sailed over the leftfield fence for a 3 run shot. Later in the inning Alex Krull singled again to become the 1st Hedgehog in the modern era to single twice in the same inning against the Saarlouis Hornets.
The Hedgehogs wrapped it up in the 6th when Dorer lead off with a double. Jeff Berks was then hit by a pitch. Dave Cox reached again on error. Gonzalez drove in a run on ground out. The game was over when the Rightfielder could not hold on to Robert Kane’s booming drive up against the rightfield fence.
Starting Pitcher Dave Cox held the Hornets to 2 runs on 6 hits. The Hedgehogs made 3 errors behind him. Dave struck out 5 and walked 6 and hit one batter. He was able to pitch out of several jams.
The 2nd game brought similar results for Saarlouis. They started a quick right hander from the Dom Rep, but back to back singles by Schoppa and Krull followed by a double from young star Peter Schend made 1-0. The pitcher walked Berks, Braun and Cox in order forcing in one run. Gonzalez doubled in two more runs and then the pitcher balked in Cox. Kane ended the scoring by driving in a run with a single.
In the 3rd the Hedgehogs were right back at it. After two quick outs Berks singled and stole second. Erik Braun drove him in with a single. Cox singled and that set the stage for the Big Man. Gonzales hit a line drive over the centerfield fence for 3 run jack. “L-Gon” had struck again.
The Hedgehogs came to bat one more time in the 4th. After Krull reached on an error, Peter Schend singled. Dorer was hit by a pitch and then Jeff Berks doubled in 2 runs. Backup 1st baseman, the rookie Ben Dowell ended the scoring with a Sac Fly. It was his first RBI as a Hedgehog.
On the hill the second game for the Hedgehogs was Simon Von Schwedler who for the second week in a row flirted with a shutout only to lose it in the last inning after a wild pitch allowed a runner from 3rd to score. He was in charge on the mound striking out 3 while walking 1 and hitting 2 more. The Hornets were only able to manage 3 hits off him.
The games were marred by a disagreement between the opposing Managers over how many runs are enough runs.
The Hedgehogs have the next weeks off finding themselves in 2nd place.
