Gamereport: Heidelberg @ Mainz
It was the Wright Day to be in Mainz on Saturday. Every time you looked up Robert Wright was standing on 2nd with a double. The Hedgehogs won both games but it could only be described as ugly. In the 1st game Simon Von Schwedler had difficulty finding the umpires strike zone. Down 11-4 with nobody out in the 3rd, Manager Les Green replaced him with Dom Dorer. Dom held the A’s down until the 7th giving the Hedgehogs a chance to battle back and take the lead, scoring 2 in the 5th , 8 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th. With 1 out and 2 runs in and the bases loaded Luis Gonzalez took over in the bottom of the 7th. He struck out the 1st batter he faced and got the next batter to pop up to the 2nd baseman to nail down the victory 16-13.
The 2nd game started well for the Hedgehogs. Jumping out to a 10-0 lead after the 1st inning, it looked like this could be an easy win. But on this day nothing was easy. Mainz scored 1 in the 2nd, 5 in the 3rd and to get right back in the game. The young players on the Mainz team were real battlers who refused to give it up. Von Schwedler, who had started the 2nd game as well, left with 1 out in the 4th and 2 runs in. Dorer came in to get the final 2 outs in the inning. Dorer went back to the mound in the 5th but could not finish it. Again Gonzalez came in and held the A’s to 1 run in the last 2 innings. The Hedgehogs continued to score, piling up 17 runs in a 17 to 12 victory.
The big star was the Shortstop Robert Wright. He was 5 for 7 with 4 doubles, a triple and 9 RBI’s. Simon Von
Schwedler was 5 for 7 with a double, 5 RBIs and walked once and was hit by a pitch 3 times.
The 2 wins coupled with Kaiserslautern’s 2 losses in Saarlouis left the Hedgehogs in 1st place at the end of the day.
